Testimonials from our Student Leaders

Marshall Catholic Newman CenterAshley Pfohl
Hi there, my name is Ashley, and I'm a current junior here at Marshall. I'm majoring in medical imaging, aka x-rays, to eventually become a radiation therapist for cancer patients. I'm also the Student Leader in charge of the Liturgy/Sacraments committee. I basically help decide what spiritual events happen at the facility, including adoration, Mass parts, and Confession. I've been attending the Newman Center since my freshman year at Marshall, and I can't imagine my how my life would be now if I had decided not to attend events with one of my best friends Eileen, also a Student Leader. I absolutely love how the Newman Center has acted as a second home to me while I'm here at school, from the fully stocked kitchen to the wonderful conversations with the campus minister, Traci.  And I can't forget to mention the wonderful spiritual friends I've made over the past two years because of the activities we have at the Newman Center. They are like family to me, and I can't wait to add to our growing Newman community!

Welcome! I'm Nick and I am a Senior History Major here at Marshall University. I am an active member of Student Government, Young Americans for Liberty, Phi Alpha Theta History Honors Society, John Marshall Emerging Leaders Institute, Marshall Housing and Residence Life, and last but certainly not least the Marshall Catholic Newman Center Leadership Team.
The Marshall Catholic Newman Center has in many ways been my home away from home. The facility itself is fully up to date and is very warm and inviting. I love going there to get lunch, study, and just enjoy good fellowship with the amazing people there. As a Catechumen entering the Church I can say without a doubt that the Newman Center has been very instrumental in helping me to develop my knowledge and understanding about Catholicism through the RCIA program. I've been so passionate about my new found faith that I want to share it with the world, or in my case the rest of Marshall's campus, which is why I am the head of the Campus Outreach Committee. Our goal is to reach out to as many other students and groups as possible as we carry out the New Evangelization. We hope you visit sometime and say hi! We'd love to have you. Thanks for stopping by, and peace be with you!

Marshall Catholic Newman CenterEileen Pender
My name is Eileen Pender and I am a junior at Marshall, studying pre-veterinary medicine. I came to the Newman Center when I was requested to by another student my freshman year at Marshall. Since the first time I came, I felt extremely welcomed. I feel like I have another family at Marshall who supports me and helps me in all I do, whether it is part of my spiritual life or not. That being said, I have grown immensely in my faith since I came to the Newman Center. I have decided to finally be confirmed in the Catholic faith.
I am the committee leader for dead week activities. Dead week, a.k.a. stress-free week, is a time for all students of Marshall to come and enjoy some great activities together. These activities have included a “puppy day,” “massage day,” sno-cones, and ice cream sundaes. There is one activity each day during dead week and I’m looking forward to planning it for the end of the semester.

HI! I'm Kelly. I'm basically a bundle of random, crazy energy. I'm studying elementary education with a specialization in middle school science.
The Newman Center is my very favorite spot on campus-- the fridge and pantry are always stocked, there is outstanding fellowship with my peers and awesome campus minister, and it has become a source of comfort while I'm away from home. I'm the head of the Special Events Committee, which basically means if you're wanting to have fun and participate in awesome events, I'm your girl. Aside from all of the fun and laughter though, I have learned SO much about my Catholic faith, allowing me to fall even more deeply in love with it. I'm so thankful I've been given the opportunity to take advantage of such an awesome resource here at Marshall.

Marshall Catholic Newman CenterElisabeth Offenberger
Hello! I am Elisabeth Offenberger, a dietetic major (aka food and nutrition) and senior at Marshall. I am the Service Chair for the Student Leadership Team. I plan one-time service activities as well as work on promoting The Gabriel Project that we house. Over the last four years, the Newman Center has been a home, a family, a friend, and a support system. My freshman year, I was persuaded to come to the Newman Center by a family friend and I am grateful for that every day. I even met my best friend, Jackie, through the Newman Center. Whether you stop by for a spiritual event, Mass, or free food you will be glad you did! Come say hi; we can't wait!

Marshall Catholic Newman CenterKelsey Higgins
Hello! My name is Kelsey. I am studying communication disorders so that one day I can, hopefully, be a speech language pathologist.
The Newman Center is one of my favorite places on campus, and not just because Traci feeds me delicious food! The Newman Center and everyone there have helped me grow stronger in my faith. I have made many friends and memories through the activities offered and from hanging out here in between classes. If you are in the area you should definitely come by!

What's Up? I am Ben Heil. I'm a junior nursing student. I enjoy ultimate frisbee, long walks on the beach, and the Marshall Catholic Newman Center. I started coming to the NC (Newman Center) when I was a freshman. I didn't plan on getting as involved as I did. This place is my second home. It is more than just the place you go to church. We are a little family here and we hope you come here and experience the awesomeness that is the Marshall Catholic Newman Center.
